Gridiron
This is the dream of some very dedicated and patient men.
Michael Ryan, the president of the club.
PT the coach, and Darren the assistant coach.
August of 2007 saw the first training session for the Sharks. We
were at a tiny, unkempt reserve that was accessed from Dampier
Blvd in Killarney vale.
After running some laps and some drills, the coaches went
through some basis ball skills of the game. Once the players
understood the reasoning behind the running routes and ball
handling techniques, the training sessions flowed well.
Players were quick to learn that lack of attention or chatting
to much would earn the push ups, laps or bear crawls. After a
few months we upgraded to the rugby field located on Sir Joseph
Banks Dr in Bateau Bay. Our numbers varied but with a good base
of a regular 15- 20 with one female.
Many players showing great promise lots of heart, and a unique
dedication to a sport that is not native to Australia.
A 3 on 3 flag tournament , put all the drills and training
routes into perspective for the players along with building a
strong team spirit amongst the players.
2008 saw the loss of a few regulars, and renewed dedication from
our other players. Their female player (Jane Spain) joined the
coaching staff and worked with the juniors, getting their
playbook down and working as a team. During the winter we took
to training in the Gym with Mingara looking after our needs.
